Duderö, 2016

lenticular print, 29,7x42 cm

The work is inspired by a text from Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, written in 1933. Main subject of examination in "In the Praise of Shadows" is how the aesthetics of light in Japanese culture has been influenced by the Western world. Comparisons of light and darkness are used to contrast Western and Asian cultures. The West is in constant search of clarity, while according to Japanese tradition light unfolds its qualities in the shadows.

The work shows a very popular lamp from IKEA, which appears on the surface in a bright blue shining form, depicting the European "fast food" understanding of "Asian-like" aesthetics.
